DOTZ DD2.JZ – “Custom Made Power Steering”

Need is the mother of invention

After countless, completed work activities on the DD2.JZ, one thing still remains open for the two technicians Daniel and Christian: why does the power steering system still not work? In this part of the series, the two devote themselves into finding a solution to this issue.

Without an original combo tool it is not possible to establish a connection to the electrical system. Therefore, this must be installed invisibly in the vehicle interior. By default, the electric serial power steering system of the BMW Z4 transmits a so-called CAN-Bus signal. For this purpose, the speed of the motor is necessary. Therefore, to solve the problem, the two consider how to move the Haltech engine control unit to send the BMW signal to the steering.

After a short discussion, the two agree to install a hydraulic power steering into the DD2.ZZ after weighing up the advantages and disadvantages. They organize a matching BMW E46 steering gear from a nearby car recycler. All other parts are taken from the Aristo frontcut.

Daniel takes care of disassembling the tie rods to assemble them to the original pickup points.

However, the Z4 handlebar does not fit the BMW E46 steering gear. They can be remedied by a further special order to produce a functioning connection between the steering wheel and the steering gear.

After a labor-intensive day, the most important parts of the hydraulic steering are already in the vehicle. Some fine work such as the adjustment of the handlebar are still pending. In the next step, the two technicians devote themselves to installing the safety cell and the creation of a new vehicle design.
